Fishermen have decided to protest against the government's decision to permit longline fishing targeting yellowfin and bigeye tuna, a move the government claims is intended to further develop the Maldives' pelagic fishery.
The Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU), which is leading the effort, stated that fishermen are preparing to hold a major protest against longline fishing. The demonstration is being organized by the union in collaboration with civil society organizations currently advocating against the practice. In preparation, the union is currently discussing the date and time for the protest. BKMU stated that the details will be announced as soon as they are finalized.
BKMU explained that the protest aims to bring the fishermen's opposition to longline fishing to the government's attention and to call for a review of the decision to open up the fishery.
"We have always been against longline fishing. We expressed our refusal during the consultation meeting held at the Fisheries Ministry as well. We also submitted our views on the longline fishing regulation. However, we do not see the government paying any attention. Even yesterday, we saw the emergency motion submitted to Parliament regarding this matter being thrown out. Government members did not even want to debate it. This is where the problem lies. That is why we are coming out," BKMU stated.
BKMU has invited all fishermen, civil society organizations, and well-wishers to participate in the protest. The union emphasized that this is in no way a politically motivated demonstration, but rather a protest held for the rights of fishermen and their families. Therefore, they have requested all parties not to politicize the event.
"We request all political parties not to politicize this and to refrain from participating. This is a protest by the children of the ocean. This means fishermen, people who make a living from various ocean resources, individuals working in related fields such as divers, fishing families, well-wishers of fishermen, and those working to protect the oceans of the Maldives. Generally, we invite all parties interested in advocating for us in good faith," BKMU stated.
BKMU added that fishermen, crew members, and captains from across the Maldives will participate in the protest.
