Fishermen's Day Fishing Competition Commences in Dhuvaafaru

The reef fishing competition held as part of the activities to celebrate this year's Fishermen's Day has commenced.

The competition, titled 'Fishermen's Day Fishing Competition 2025', is being held in R. Dhuvaafaru. The race was inaugurated by Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam. The opening ceremony was attended by the Dhuvaafaru Council, senior officials of the Fisheries Ministry, individuals who visited Dhuvaafaru to participate in the Fishermen's Day activities, skippers, and fishermen.

With over 90 participants, the fishing race started at 03:15 pm from the island's harbour. The race will conclude at 09:15 pm tonight. A total of 10 teams are participating in this race, including five teams from Dhuvaafaru, 4 teams from Ugoofaaru, and 1 team from Rasmaadhoo.

The tournament is being conducted with cash prizes awarded to the winning teams.

Tournament Standings and Prizes:

• First place team: 15,000 Rufiyaa
• Second place team: 10,000 Rufiyaa
• Third place team: 7,000 Rufiyaa
• Heaviest fish caught: 500 Rufiyaa

Additionally, the Maldives Fisheries and Ocean Resources Marketing and Promotion Corporation Limited has also offered cash prizes to the winning teams. Accordingly, 10,000 Rufiyaa is offered to the first team, 5,000 Rufiyaa to the second team, and 3,000 Rufiyaa to the third team.
