The Fisheries Ministry has announced the commencement of a new round of Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) deployments as part of ongoing efforts to expand the Maldives' FAD network.
After a temporary pause in FAD installation work, the ministry stated that 4 FADs will be deployed in this upcoming round. This includes 3 trolling FADs and 1 pole-and-line FAD. In this round, FADs are scheduled to be deployed near M. Kolhufushi, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, Th. Vilufushi, and GA. Kolamaafushi. With the exception of the Vilufushi FAD, all others are newly established trolling FADs.
The Fisheries Ministry stated that the ministry's team will travel south first in this round. According to the current plan, the departure is scheduled for the 24th of this month, though the ministry noted that the trip could be delayed if the weather deteriorates.
The Maldives' FAD network currently consists of 75 pole-and-line FADs and 41 trolling FADs. Pole-and-line FADs are specifically designed for pole-and-line or offshore tuna fishing. Trolling FADs are designated for reef fishing and recreational fishing.
The Fisheries Ministry previously stated that although many islands have requested FAD installations, the work cannot proceed at a pace matching the demand. Therefore, priority is currently given to replacing lost FADs as quickly as possible rather than installing new ones. Challenges in FAD deployment include delays in manufacturing due to having only one FAD production center at present, as well as the high costs associated with installation. As a solution, preparations are underway to establish FAD production centers in two regions of the Maldives. The ministry stated that once these centers are established, it will be easier to expand the FAD network and replace lost FADs.
