A Management Strategy Evaluation training program has commenced to expand the role of science in planning, managing, and sustaining fisheries among Indian Ocean coastal states, and to establish procedures for agreeing on management measures.
The workshop, conducted jointly by the Maldives and the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), began yesterday with 36 delegates from 16 Indian Ocean coastal states participating in the training program. Participants include scientists from the South Pacific, the Chair of the IOTC Scientific Committee, and leading scientists from various committees.
The three-day training program, held at Bandos Maldives, was inaugurated by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Dr. Aminath Shafia. In her remarks, she highlighted the significance of the training program and the importance of increasing the participation of coastal states in measures taken to plan, manage, and sustain fisheries in the Indian Ocean. She also noted that hosting such training programs will play a leading role in empowering coastal states.
Delegates from relevant ministries, government institutions, and agencies are also participating in this workshop. The meeting will continue until tomorrow.
