Fisheries College Outreach Centre to be established in Kolamaafushi

Land has been allocated in Kolamaafushi to establish and operate an outreach centre of the Maldives National University (MNU) Fisheries College.

Following discussions between MNU and the Kolamaafushi Council, the council has allocated a 15,000 square foot plot of land to build the Fisheries College outreach centre. An agreement to hand over this land to MNU was signed yesterday.

At a special ceremony held at MNU yesterday for this purpose, the agreement was signed on behalf of the Kolamaafushi Council by the Council President, Ibrahim Waheed. On behalf of the Maldives National University, it was signed by Vice Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam.

MNU stated that this centre will become a notable and important hub for advancing fisheries education, research, and sustainable marine development. Furthermore, opportunities will be opened for those conducting research in the fields of fisheries, marine, and environment, which MNU says will bring economic, social, and environmental progress.

Huvadhu Atoll, to which GA. Kolamaafushi belongs, is the centre of pole-and-line fishing in the Maldives. The establishment of this centre in the region will be a great opportunity for many interested in the field to conduct research and gain practical experience in fisheries, marine, and environmental fields. Additionally, this is a project that will bring significant progress to the fisheries sector for the atoll and the entire Maldives.
