Fish Purchases by Companies Increased Significantly Last Year

Statistics from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) show that the amount of fish purchased by fish purchasing companies last year increased significantly compared to the previous year.

According to the statistics released by the central bank, MMA, fish purchasing companies bought 53,232 metric tonnes of fish in 2024, while 88,347 metric tonnes of fish were purchased in the recently concluded year 2025. This represents a 66 percent increase when comparing the two years.

Skipjack tuna was the most purchased fish by companies last year. Companies bought 72,878.8 metric tonnes of skipjack tuna, which is an 80.2 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Last year, companies purchased 14,950.1 metric tonnes of yellowfin tuna. This is also a 19.9 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Last year, companies purchased the highest volume of fish in February and December. While 12,224.5 metric tonnes of fish were purchased in February, 9,959.8 metric tonnes were purchased in December. The lowest volume of fish was purchased in October, which stood at 3,661.1 metric tonnes.
