The technical team of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) currently visiting the Maldives has inspected the work.
The preparation of drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in the Maldives is carried out at a specially established center in Hulhumale'. The Ministry, in collaboration with the FAO, has initiated a program to further develop the design of the FADs currently used by the Ministry. Under this program, it has been agreed to change the design of the FADs currently used in the Maldives.
Under this work, FAO technical experts visited the Hulhumale' FAD establishment center yesterday and observed how the work is progressing. The Ministry stated that the team also gathered information on the materials used to prepare the FADs and the process of their preparation.
The FAO team's trip to the Maldives was to participate in a meeting organized by the Fisheries Ministry on the 20th of this month to seek the opinions of stakeholders working in the fishing industry on changing the design of the FADs currently in use.
Currently, having only one FAD production center poses challenges in deploying FADs. To bring a solution to this, the Fisheries Ministry has announced that work has begun to establish FAD centers in the north and south of the Maldives. While the northern center will be established in Sh. Funadhoo, it has been decided to establish the southern FAD center in GDh. Vaadhoo.
