The Fisheries Ministry deployed this FAD today, 5 miles west of the island.

With the GA. Melaimugu FAD, the total number of FADs in GA. Atoll has reached 3. In 2023, the Fisheries Ministry deployed a FAD 4.5 miles off Maamendhoo in the atoll, and in 2024, another FAD was deployed 5 miles east of Kodafehala in the atoll.
FADs established at a distance of between 3 to 6 miles around islands are specially designed for trolling and sports fishing. The FAD is designed with a light visible from afar and a radar reflector to easily identify its location.
Expanding the FAD network is one of the important initiatives undertaken by the government to develop the fishing industry. To expedite this work and to facilitate the prompt repair or replacement of damaged or lost FADs, the government is preparing to establish FAD production centres in the north and south of the Maldives.
