A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with a Chinese company to establish a Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) factory in Addu City for processing and exporting chilled yellowfin tuna.
To proceed with the Addu City yellowfin tuna factory project, MIFCO signed an MoU today with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) as part of the company's efforts to further develop and strengthen its infrastructure.
MIFCO stated that it has not yet been decided on which island in Addu City the factory will be established. However, under the MoU signed today, the Chinese company will assess how to proceed with the factory's establishment, and a separate agreement for the construction of the factory will be signed with the company in the future to commence practical work.
MIFCO facilities are currently already purchasing yellowfin tuna. Additionally, the company introduced canned yellowfin tuna to the market this month.
