The Ministry of Fisheries has extended the deadline for registration in its training programme designed to generate interest in fisheries among youth and introduce them to the sector.
Conducted with assistance from the World Bank under the Transforming Fisheries Sector in the South-West Indian Ocean Region and Maldives Project, this training programme aims to foster interest in fisheries among youth and provide them with opportunities to acquire relevant training and skills to enter the fisheries sector and related fields. The Ministry initially opened the opportunity to participate in this programme from August 16 to August 27.
After the deadline had passed, the Ministry yesterday granted a renewed two-week period for interested individuals to apply. The Ministry did not state the reason for reopening the opportunity. In an announcement published yesterday regarding this matter, the Ministry requested that those wishing to participate in the training programme complete the application form and email it along with a copy of their ID card before 14:00 on September 17. The application form can be downloaded from the Gazette.
The training programme is scheduled to run from September to the end of November. The first round of the 3-month training programme will offer opportunities to 5 youths who wish to newly enter the fisheries sector. During the training programme, participants will be provided with a daily allowance.
The Ministry of Fisheries previously stated that in addition to providing technical information on fisheries, participants will have the opportunity to engage in practical fishing activities. As such, participants will receive practical training and skills on how to fish from some of the most experienced captains in the Maldives, aboard one of the most notable pole-and-line fishing vessels operating in the skipjack tuna fishery.
