Dr. Riyaz Appointed as Dean of Fisheries College!

Dr. Ahmed Riyaz Jauharee has been appointed as the Dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the Maldives National University.

Dr. Riyaz, who holds higher education in the field of marine ecology, was appointed as the Dean of the Fisheries College at a special ceremony held at MNU yesterday.

Speaking after assuming the position of Dean, Dr. Riyaz stated that the Fisheries College is not just an institution that teaches fisheries education, but noted that it will become an important foundation for understanding ecological systems and passing them on to future generations. He also said that the education provided by the college will be knowledge that facilitates obtaining the maximum benefit from fisheries and marine resources, and that the students of the college will become individuals working at the forefront of the marine science sector in the Maldives, learning in the light of research.

The decision to establish a Fisheries College in the Maldives for the first time was announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in his speech at the ceremony held to mark the 43rd Fishermen's Day of the Maldives last year. A Memorandum of Understanding to establish the Fisheries College was signed between MNU and the Fisheries Ministry on December 27 last year.

MNU has now announced 4 courses scheduled to be conducted at the college this year. The opportunity to apply for these courses will expire tomorrow. These courses include a National Certificate 3 in Sports Fishing Guiding and 3 national level courses in Fish Processing and Quality Control.

Although certificate courses are starting at this time, it has been decided to conduct higher post-graduate courses related to fisheries at the college in the future.
