Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam and Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal have held discussions regarding the development of sports fishing harbours in 5 regions of the Maldives.
During the meeting held yesterday, Minister Shiyam shared information with Minister Faisal about the 5 regions proposed for the development of these harbours. Minister Shiyam also noted that the President gives high priority to developing mariculture as an industry and increasing local production in the Maldives.
Minister Faisal stated that the Ministry of Tourism will provide full cooperation to expedite this project. He also mentioned that technical experts will assist the Ministry of Fisheries with the tourism component.
Planned under the policy formulated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to diversify the fisheries sector, this project aims to facilitate sports fishing, an activity that is becoming increasingly popular among Maldivian youth.
Establishing fishing harbours is a pledge included in chapter 3.5 of the current government's manifesto regarding fisheries. The Ministry of Fisheries stated that this project will bring further progress to the fisheries and tourism sectors of the Maldives.
