The Ministry of Fisheries has held discussions with Sri Lanka to stop illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in the maritime territories of the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the Maldives, His Excellency Mohamed Rizvi Hassen, and senior officials of the Fisheries Ministry participated in the discussion meeting held at the Fisheries Ministry today.
The main focus of this meeting was discussing measures that can be taken to stop illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Furthermore, the Fisheries Ministry stated that extensive discussions were held regarding the legal procedures followed in detaining and taking action against such vessels under the Maldives Fisheries Act, as well as the systems related to "innocent passage" or crossing the maritime territory without committing an offense.
