Discussions held regarding the yellowfin tuna packing facility to be established in Hulhumale

A consultative meeting has been held regarding the work on the yellowfin tuna packing facility planned to be established in Hulhumale.

The meeting, held today at the Fisheries Ministry, was attended by Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Mohamed Maroof, and other senior officials from the ministry and HDC.

The ministry stated that discussions during the meeting focused on the co-packing facility and fish market being established in Hulhumale, aimed at those active in the yellowfin tuna fishery. Discussions included relocating existing services and clearing the 25,000 square foot plot allocated by HDC for the facility. A fish market and a cafe are currently operating on the land designated for this facility.

The 35-tonne yellowfin tuna processing facility in Hulhumale is being established as a replacement after K. Kanduoiygiri Fish Village was handed over for the use of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). Following the government's decision on August 4 last year to hand over Kanduoiygiri, which was used as the main hub for lifestyle products produced by MIFCO, to the MNDF, the island was vacated and handed over to the MNDF in October.
