Discussions held on capacity building for the fisheries industry

Important discussions have been held between MNU's College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences and the Fisheries Ministry regarding capacity building and training for the fisheries industry.

The discussions took place yesterday at the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences during a meeting between State Minister for Fisheries Dr. Amzath Ahmed and the Dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, Dr. Ahmed Riyaz Jauharee.

The meeting mainly focused on training fishermen and identifying areas for capacity building in the fisheries industry. The two officials also discussed the importance of providing training and enhancing skills.

Furthermore, they exchanged views on the importance of offering degree-level education at the Fisheries College, as well as conducting research on fisheries and oceans.

This meeting is an important step towards advancing the Maldives' fisheries industry and producing technical personnel required for the sector. It is hoped that such discussions will lead to educational and training advancements in the fisheries sector.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the decision to establish the first-ever Fisheries College in the Maldives during his speech at the ceremony held to mark the 43rd Fishermen's Day last year. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the Fisheries College was signed between MNU and the Fisheries Ministry on December 27 last year.

The Fisheries College is scheduled to conduct 4 national certificate courses this year. These include a National Certificate 3 in Sports Fishing Guiding and three national-level courses in Fish Processing and Quality Control. Although certificate courses are currently being launched, the college has also decided to conduct higher postgraduate courses related to fisheries in the future.

Dr. Ahmed Riyaz Jauharee was appointed as the Dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences on September 1. Dr. Jauharee holds higher education qualifications in the field of marine ecology.
