The deadline to apply for the awards to be presented at the government's official ceremony to mark this year's Fishermen's Day will expire tomorrow.
Three awards are scheduled to be presented at the ceremony held on the occasion of this year's Fishermen's Day. They are the Experienced Skipper, the Dedicated Young Skipper, and the Dedicated Reef Fisherman awards. The Fisheries Ministry opened the opportunity to apply for the awards on the first of October for interested parties. The deadline for submitting the completed application form is 14:00 on Thursday, 23 October 2025. The application form can be sent to the Ministry's email address fisheriesmanagement@fisheries.gov.mv.
Skippers and fishermen who meet the requirements for these awards can nominate themselves in their personal capacity. Alternatively, there is also the opportunity for another party to submit a nomination. The Fisheries Ministry stated that only individuals belonging to North Maalhosmadulu Atoll can apply for these awards.
Award Details:
Dedicated Young Skipper: The most dedicated young skipper currently actively engaged in fishing, and who does not do any other work to earn an income besides fishing. Only skippers under 35 years of age can apply for this award.
Dedicated Reef Fisherman: The dedicated reef fisherman whose main income-generating activity is reef fishing.
Every year, the 10th of December is marked as Fishermen's Day. Fishermen's Day is celebrated at the national level with the aim of appreciating Maldivian fishermen and encouraging their work. This year marks the 45th Fishermen's Day. The official celebrations of Fishermen's Day this year are scheduled to be held in R. Dhuvaafaru.
