The Ministry of Fisheries has extended the deadline for islands interested in hosting this year's official Fishermen's Day celebrations.
The opportunity to express interest in hosting Fishermen's Day was opened to islands across all atolls in the Maldives on April 30. The initial deadline for submissions expired on May 31. The Ministry of Fisheries stated that an additional opportunity has now been granted due to the numerous public holidays coinciding with Eid al-Adha during the previous submission period.
Taking advantage of this renewed opportunity, interested islands can submit their applications via the Government E-Letter Management System (GEMS) before 12:00 pm on Sunday, June 14, 2026, according to the Ministry. The Ministry has requested that anyone wishing to clarify any information regarding the "Application Form to Host the Official Celebrations of Fishermen's Day 2026" call the Ministry's number, 3339274.
The Ministry of Fisheries stated that priority will be given to fishing islands when determining the host island for the official Fishermen's Day celebrations. In considering an island as a fishing island, the Ministry will look at the number of registered fishermen and fishing vessels on the island.
Factors considered in selecting the host island for the official Fishermen's Day celebrations include ensuring the island is not hosting another national day this year, and if the island has previously hosted Fishermen's Day, that at least 5 years have passed since the event. The level of interest among the island's residents in celebrating Fishermen's Day will also be evaluated. Furthermore, the Ministry stated it will consider the island's infrastructural development, arrangements for welcoming guests, accommodation arrangements for guests participating in the celebrations, and the activities proposed by the island to mark Fishermen's Day.
December 10 is celebrated annually as Fishermen's Day. The day is marked at a national level to appreciate Maldivian fishermen and encourage their work. This year will mark the 46th Fishermen's Day.
