The opportunity opened for islands across all atolls of the Maldives to submit proposals to host the official celebrations of the 45th Fishermen's Day this year will expire on the 19th of this month.
The Ministry of Fisheries opened the opportunity for islands across all atolls to submit proposals to host the official celebrations for this year's Fishermen's Day on May 21. Islands wishing to host the celebrations must submit their proposals to the Ministry of Fisheries via the Government E-Letter Management System (GEMS) before 12:00 on Thursday, the 19th of this month. The "Application Form to Host the Official Celebrations of Fishermen's Day 2025" can be downloaded from the Ministry of Fisheries website. The Ministry stated that further information regarding the form can be clarified by calling the Ministry's number: 3339274.
The Ministry of Fisheries stated that priority will be given to fishing islands when determining the host island for the official Fishermen's Day celebrations. In this regard, the Ministry noted that the number of registered fishermen and fishing vessels on the island will be considered when determining if it is a fishing island.
Additional conditions considered when selecting the host island for the official Fishermen's Day celebrations include ensuring the island is not hosting another national-level day this year, and if the island has previously hosted Fishermen's Day, at least 5 years must have passed since the event. The level of interest from the island's residents in celebrating Fishermen's Day will also be evaluated. Furthermore, the Ministry stated that infrastructural development on the island, arrangements for welcoming guests, accommodation arrangements for guests participating in the celebrations, and the activities proposed by the island to celebrate Fishermen's Day will be taken into account.
December 10 is celebrated every year as Fishermen's Day. Fishermen's Day is celebrated at a national level to appreciate Maldivian fishermen and encourage their work. Last year, the 44th Fishermen's Day was celebrated in Male' City.
