The GDh. Faresmaathodaa vessel 'Daisy View' has caught a Black Scabbardfish.
Although an official Dhivehi name for this fish has not yet been approved, fishermen refer to it as "Kalhukashi Mas" because it resembles the snake mackerel (Kashi Mas).
Hassan Zahir, the captain of the Daisy View vessel, stated that a Black Scabbardfish was caught by the vessel this morning, and it is estimated to weigh between 2-4 kilograms. The captain also mentioned that the fish was caught at a depth of 400 meters in the ocean on the western side of GDh. Thinadhoo.
Since this is a deep-sea fish, it is not commonly caught in the Maldives. However, the Maldives Biodiversity Organization stated that there are records of this fish being caught occasionally in various atolls over the past 7 years. The organization also noted that a confirmed Dhivehi name for this fish does not exist.
The Black Scabbardfish is a deep-sea predatory fish found in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is known for its long, thick body and black, metallic color. Living at depths between 200 and 1,700 meters, this fish is commonly found around Madeira, the Azores, and the Canary Islands.
This deep-sea fish is often caught using various fishing gears. The fish comes to the surface at night to feed. With sharp teeth, it eats various types of fish and squid. The Black Scabbardfish is highly valued in some regions and is commercially profitable. Especially in Madeira, it is consumed as a valuable delicacy and is sold in markets there.
