The B. Thulhaadhoo Island Council has announced it is seeking a contractor to build a fish market on the island.
The Thulhaadhoo Council stated that the fish market is planned to be built on the western side of the B. Thulhaadhoo harbour, in the area designated for it in the island's land use plan. A plot of 3,788 square feet, measuring 11 meters in width and 32 meters in length, has been allocated for the market.
The project will be carried out under a contractor finance model, where the contractor taking on the project will be responsible for all expenses. Out of the total 3,788 square feet allocated, the contractor will have the opportunity to build on and utilize the remaining space after constructing the fish market. The council specified that 2,000 square feet must be used for the fish market, and the contractor will also be given the opportunity to build multiple stories above the fish market building for their own use. The council further stated that the upper part of the building will be given to the contractor rent-free for a period of 30 years.
The council has now opened the opportunity for interested parties to submit proposals starting from the 27th of this month. Proposals must be submitted before 13:00 on the 8th of this month. The council mentioned that proposals can be submitted at the office counter or via email. Emails should be sent to info@thulhaadhoo.gov.mv.
The Thulhaadhoo Council decided to build a fish market because the island is a fishing community, and fishing constitutes a large percentage of the island's economy. The aim is to resolve the difficulties fishermen face in cutting fish on the island and to provide a convenient arrangement for it. Additionally, the council stated that establishing a modern fish market is currently one of the most pressing needs to provide a place where buyers and sellers can operate under an easy system, thereby advancing and expanding the fishing economy in Thulhaadhoo.
The fish market will be built with at least 12 stations specifically for cutting tuna, at least 6 stations for cutting reef fish, a platform and walkway for easy movement of buyers, a room for an administrative office, 2 toilets, and a shower area that can be used by 4 people simultaneously.
