The MNDF Coast Guard Ship 'Huravee' was brought back to the Maldives last night after undergoing repairs in India.
The Coast Guard Ship 'Huravee', gifted by India in 2023, was taken to India for repairs in November last year. After successfully completing its first refit at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, India, the ship departed Mumbai and docked in the Maldives last night. 'Huravee' traveled to the Maldives under the escort of the Indian naval ship Kochi. The Indian Navy repaired the vessel at the expense of the Indian government, in accordance with the decision made by the Indian government during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's official visit to India in October last year.
During the refit of 'Huravee', important work was carried out to repair all machinery, weapons, and sensors of the vessel, as well as to improve living conditions. Before departing India, the vessel was tested in the harbor and at sea, completing operational checks of its equipment, safety audits, and operational sea training.
Following the arrival of 'Huravee' in the Maldives, the ship was officially handed over to the Chief of Defence Force, Major General Ibrahim Hilmy, by the Indian Ambassador to the Maldives, Shri Munu Mahawar, at a ceremony held this morning at the MNDF Coast Guard Jetty in Hulhumale. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, officials, and military personnel.
While 'Huravee' was repaired with the assistance of the Indian government, operational equipment and essential spare parts needed for future maintenance of the ship were also gifted to the MNDF. In addition, a large quantity of ammunition and musical instruments were handed over to the MNDF at the ceremony.
The return of 'Huravee' after repairs is a symbol of the strong maritime relationship between the two countries. It is also evidence of the close strategic and military relationship India maintains with the Maldives under the Indian government's 'Neighborhood First Policy' and 'Vision SAGAR'.
The largest vessel in the Maldivian maritime military, previously used as Coast Guard 'Huravee', was also a vessel gifted by India in 2006. That vessel was also repaired by India on 6 different occasions. Coast Guard 'Kaamiyaabu' is also a vessel gifted by India in 2019.
