The Fisheries Ministry has officially handed over scholarship letters to the youth selected for the 'Youth Internship Programme', an initiative launched to generate interest in fishing among young people and bring them into the fisheries sector.
Conducted with the assistance of the World Bank under the Transforming Fisheries Sector in the South-West Indian Ocean Region and Maldives Project, this training programme aims to generate interest in fishing among the youth. It is designed to provide young people with the opportunity to acquire relevant training and skills to enter the fisheries sector and related fields.
The first round of this programme is being conducted with 5 young participants. Meeting with the youth, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam officially handed over the certificates of selection to the programme yesterday. During this meeting, the Minister highlighted the important role Maldivian youth play in sustainably advancing the future of the fisheries sector. The Minister also noted that this programme is a very important step towards fulfilling the significant pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to empower youth and build the next generation of skilled fishermen. Senior officials of the Ministry also participated in this meeting held at the Fisheries Ministry yesterday.
In preparation for this programme, the participants have completed a 'General Navigation Course' in R. Dhuvaafaru with the assistance of the Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard. The internship will now proceed on some of the highest-catching fishing vessels in the Maldives. In this regard, the Ministry stated that they will acquire practical training for a period of 3 months alongside experienced fishermen and vessel crew members.
