The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has stated that work has begun to bring a 3,000 metric tonne fish purchasing boat to the Maldives to export fish.
Speaking on the "Raajje Miadhu" programme broadcasted by Public Service Media (PSM), MIFCO's General Manager Muaz Ali stated that as this is a period of abundant fishing in the Maldives, work has begun to bring in a foreign fish purchasing boat to increase the fish purchasing capacity.
MIFCO stated that the boat being brought to purchase fish has now started its journey to the Maldives, and will dock at Kooddoo this month. Muaz also stated that the fish purchased on this boat is to be taken to the European market, and the fish buying companies will test the fish at the Kooddoo harbour.
MIFCO is also working on bringing an additional boat to coincide with the fishing season. These two boats are being brought because Kooddoo does not have the capacity to purchase all the fish caught by fishermen during the fishing season. MIFCO states that with the arrival of these two boats, the issue of fishermen having to throw away their catch will be resolved. MIFCO also stated that this will bring a solution to the issue of fish being rejected due to poor quality.
