Under the regulations established to plan, manage, and monitor various types of fisheries in the Maldives, the Ministry of Fisheries has decided to form advisory committees for the management of different fisheries and has opened applications for positions on these committees.
In an announcement published by the Ministry of Fisheries regarding this matter, it stated that under the regulations for planning, managing, and monitoring tuna fisheries, grouper fisheries, billfish fisheries, sea cucumber fisheries, and reef fisheries, it has been decided to form an advisory committee to manage each of these fisheries. The 5 committees to be formed are the Tuna Fisheries Management Advisory Committee, Grouper Fisheries Management Advisory Committee, Billfish Fisheries Management Advisory Committee, Reef Fisheries Management Advisory Committee, and Sea Cucumber Fisheries Management Advisory Committee.
The responsibilities of these committees include monitoring the implementation of the management plan for the respective fishery and submitting a detailed report on the implementation to the Minister once a year; reviewing technical and other informational reports related to the fishery; advising the Ministry on management measures to be taken based on the results and recommendations from technical reports and workshops or consultative meetings held with relevant stakeholders; advising the Ministry on the national implementation of regional or international measures to manage the fishery and its trade; and advising the Ministry on the implementation, review, and revision of the management plan for the fishery.
Details of the committees and positions open for application:
- Positions on the Tuna Fisheries Management Advisory Committee:
1- One representative engaged in trolling among the types of tuna fisheries;
- Positions on the Grouper Fisheries Management Advisory Committee:
1- 1 representative representing grouper fishers
2- 1 representative representing grouper exporters
- Positions on the Billfish Fisheries Management Advisory Committee:
1- 3 representatives representing billfish fishers;
- Positions on the Reef Fisheries Management Advisory Committee:
1- 2 representatives representing reef fishers;
2- 2 representatives representing reef fish traders and exporters;
3- A relevant non-governmental organization registered in the Maldives;
- Positions on the Sea Cucumber Fisheries Management Advisory Committee:
1- 2 representatives representing sea cucumber fishers;
2- 2 representatives representing sea cucumber exporters;
Interested parties applying for these positions must submit the documents mentioned in the announcement before 12:00 pm on Thursday, 10 April 2025. Documents can be submitted to the Ministry's reception or sent via email to fisheriesmanagement@fisheries.gov.mv.
The Ministry of Fisheries stated that the term for representatives is 5 years, and in selecting representatives, if an applicant is applying to represent fishers or processors of the respective fishery, the duration of their involvement in the work will be considered. Additionally, if an applicant is applying for the position of a relevant registered non-governmental organization in the Maldives, the work done by the organization in this field will be considered. Furthermore, if no party expresses interest and applies, or if the Ministry finds that the party who expressed interest and applied is not the most suitable to fulfill the responsibilities and duties of the position, the Minister can be advised by the Ministry's Fisheries Department to appoint the most suitable party or parties, according to the Ministry of Fisheries' announcement.
Individuals holding elected or political positions cannot apply for the announced positions. Additionally, individuals holding senior positions in political parties are also ineligible to apply for these positions.
