Applications open for cooking competition to be held on Fishermen's Day
This competition, held under the name 'Rahavaru'**, will be hosted this year in Dhuvaafaru, the island decided by the government to hold the official celebrations of this year's Fishermen's Day. The Ministry stated that the competition is scheduled to be held on Saturday, 13 December 2025. The Ministry opened the opportunity to participate in this competition yesterday. The Ministry has announced that those wishing to participate in the competition must complete the competition-related form and submit it to the Ministry before 14:00 on 15 November 2025.
The Rahavaru competition is a competition held by the Ministry with the aim of providing opportunities in this field for youth and newcomers to the culinary field, and involving them in efforts to diversify and sustainably develop the fishing industry. Furthermore, highlighting the contribution of fisheries to food security in the Maldives and demonstrating the importance of producing and consuming various new types of fish products due to changes in Maldivian dietary habits is also among the objectives of holding this competition.
Every year, December 10 is marked as Fishermen's Day. Fishermen's Day is celebrated at the national level with the aim of appreciating Maldivian fishermen and encouraging their work. This year marks the 45th Fishermen's Day. The Fisheries Ministry and Dhuvaafaru Council are planning various activities to celebrate Fishermen's Day. The national ceremony for this year's Fishermen's Day will also be held in R. Dhuvaafaru. At this ceremony, awards for Experienced Skipper, Outstanding Young Skipper, and Outstanding Reef Fisherman are scheduled to be presented. The Ministry has now opened the opportunity to apply for these awards.
