The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources and the Maldives Marine Research Institute have opened applications for the first course to be held next year under the Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme.
The Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme aims to teach reef fish breeding skills and build human resources in this field. Under this programme, a basic mariculture course is scheduled to be held next year at the K. Maniyafushi Research and Training Facility. The 14-day course will run from 24 January 2026 to 05 February 2026.
The Fisheries Ministry has now opened the opportunity to participate in the course. Interested individuals are requested to submit the designated form along with a copy of their ID card to the Maldives Marine Research Institute before 14:00 on 11 January 2026.
The application form is attached to the announcement published by the Fisheries Ministry. Forms should be emailed to info@mmri.gov.mv. If more than 15 individuals apply for the training programme, participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis, the Fisheries Ministry stated.
The course, aimed at producing Maldivian technicians needed to introduce and develop a mariculture industry in the Maldives, will provide information on aquaculture systems, live feed production, breeding of grouper, sea cucumber, Maldivian clownfish and pearl oysters, identifying and preventing diseases in bred species, and conducting mariculture activities in an environmentally friendly manner. In addition, participants will be provided with practical experience in breeding grouper, sea cucumber and clownfish.
Over the past two years, four rounds of the basic mariculture course have been conducted, training 53 individuals, including female participants, from across the Maldives, the Ministry noted.
