The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecast strong winds and rough seas across the Maldives for the next five days.
In a weather bulletin released today, the MET office stated that due to a storm system formed southeast of Sri Lanka and its associated low-pressure trough, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected over a large part of the Maldives during the first five days of the new year. The MET office also forecast strong winds, rough seas, and the possibility of tidal swells in some islands.
Winds are expected to blow from the north and northeast in the northern and central atolls, and from the west and northwest in the southern atolls, at speeds between 15 and 25 miles per hour. With gusts expected to reach approximately 50 miles per hour during showers, seas are predicted to be generally rough.
As the weather is expected to worsen, the MET office has urged everyone, especially seafarers, to pay close attention to the latest weather forecasts and alerts issued by the authority.
In connection with this, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged seafarers to obtain the latest weather information before commencing their journeys and to ensure that safety measures and communication systems are fully operational before setting sail.
