While a large number of Addu fishermen are protesting near the Hulhudhoo fish factory over unpaid dues for fish weighed to MIFCO, the fishermen have stated that the whereabouts of Addu City Mayor Nizar remain unknown.
A fisherman from Addu who spoke to Keyolha said that while they have been sharing their challenges and pleading for help, Nizar has yet to meet with them. He added that the Mayor has not even checked to see what is happening. During President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's visit to Addu, Nizar was seen alongside the President, and fishermen noted they have been hearing news reports of Nizar pledging his cooperation to the government.
"I don't think Nizar knows what is going on. He is seen sitting next to the President with his hands behind his back. Surely he would get a chance to talk about us to the President, right? If he had talked about it, the media would have reported it. Nizar definitely didn't talk. The media reports a lot about Nizar. Why should he cooperate with the government if he doesn't cooperate with us? He doesn't help because he doesn't understand our feelings. That's what we can say, right?" the fishermen said.
The Addu fishermen began their protest yesterday. They stated that they will not go home until the government pays the money owed to them. They refuse to leave until the matter is resolved one way or another, demanding that the fishermen's bills be paid immediately.
