Addu fishermen protesting at the Addu Fisheries Complex have ended their strike following the release of funds by MIFCO tonight.
Speaking to Keyolha, a participant of the Addu City protest said the strike was called off just now, and with the end of the protest, the Addu Fisheries Complex will also be brought back into operation.
"We just decided this. Since the Kooddoo side also decided to end their protest, we did the same. The complex will now return to normal operations," a fisherman said.
Addu City fishermen had been protesting for three days. Due to the protest, work at the Fisheries Complex had come to a halt. The fishermen are now leaving the premises. Furthermore, fishermen from islands other than Hulhudhoo who had gone there are now preparing to depart for their home islands.
In addition to Hulhudhoo, fishermen from other atolls had also been protesting in Kooddoo until tonight. Upon confirming that MIFCO had released the funds tonight, the fishermen on that island also disbanded their protest and are now working on departing. Consequently, the opportunity to bring the Kooddoo factory back into operation has now been secured.
MIFCO released 70 million Rufiyaa tonight. While 26 million Rufiyaa for fish weighed last week will be released this week, the government has decided to release 30 million on coming Sunday/Monday. The government has also given assurances that the remaining 180 million Rufiyaa will be fully paid off by March 5.
