The Ungoofaaru Council has granted an additional opportunity to participate in the fishing competition held jointly by the Ungoofaaru Council and the Ungoofaaru Women's Development Committee to mark Fishermen's Day.
The council initially opened the opportunity to participate in this tournament, titled the '3rd Fishing Competition of the Ungoofaaru Women's Development Committee', scheduled for December 6, on the 4th of this month. Although the deadline for participation was set for November 10, the council stated that the desired number of teams had not participated. Therefore, the council has today given an additional opportunity to those interested in participating in this tournament.
The council stated that under this newly granted opportunity, interested parties should complete the application form and submit it to the Ungoofaaru Council Office before 13:30 on Sunday, November 23. The council added that the application form for the fishing competition will be issued from the Ungoofaaru Council Office between 10:30 and 13:30 on all non-public holidays.
The opportunity to participate in the race is open to both genders above 18 years of age residing in Ungoofaaru, and each participating team must consist of 5 members. Teams can be formed with a mix of men and women or separately. No foreigners are allowed to participate in this race.
This fishing competition is an initiative of the Women's Development Committee aimed at both genders in Ungoofaaru, with the objectives of celebrating Fishermen's Day, reviving and sustaining the spirit of fishermen, fostering social cohesion, and strengthening the relationship between the Women's Development Committee and fishermen. This is the third time this race is being held.
The Dhuvaafaru Council has now also amended and published the rules of the fishing competition. It includes the method of awarding places and the amount of prize money allocated. According to the rules, in the event of a tie in the number of kilograms, the team that has weighed the most fish among the tied teams will be considered. If there is still a tie, the team that arrived at the island earliest will be considered.
Places and Allocated Prizes in the Fishing Competition:
- Team with the most kilograms weighed (1st Place Team): 5,000 Rufiyaa
- Team with the second most kilograms weighed (2nd Place Team): 3,000 Rufiyaa
- Team with the third most kilograms weighed (3rd Place Team): 2,000 Rufiyaa
- Oldest Fisherman: 500 Rufiyaa
- Youngest Fisherman: 500 Rufiyaa
- Person who caught the biggest fish: A fishing rod and reel
The teams participating in this race will depart for fishing at 14:00 on Saturday, December 06, 2025, from the western harbor of Ungoofaaru. The rules of the fishing competition state that teams must be ready and present on the departing vessel at the designated area 15 minutes before departure, and failure to be present on time will result in a fine of 500 Rufiyaa. Teams must arrive back at the island before 21:00 near the area where the fishing competition ceremony is taking place at the official harbor of Ungoofaaru. The rules also state that after arriving at the island, at least 1 member of the team must be present and report to the fish weighing area before the deadline, and failure to be present on time will result in a fine of 500 Rufiyaa.
