President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that work is underway to install an additional ice plant in GA. Dhevvadhoo.
Speaking to the residents of GA. Dhevvadhoo this morning during his ongoing tour of Huvadhu Atoll, the President noted that the Dhevvadhoo ice plant has been out of operation for 3 years, and stated that repair work is underway to bring the plant back into operation. Alongside this, he also highlighted that work is underway to install a new ice plant on the island.
"The repair of the ice plant will proceed, but in addition to that, the Fisheries Ministry has now started work to bring and operate a new ice plant on this island," the President said.
The Fisheries Ministry stated that the budget required to bring the Dhevvadhoo ice plant back into operation has been arranged, and the process of awarding the work to a contractor is underway. The Fisheries Ministry also said that repairs will be completed and it will be brought into operation next month, within 30 days of signing the agreement with the contractor.
The Dhevvadhoo ice plant, which first began providing services in 2016, has a capacity of 25 tonnes. This ice plant, which was operated by Fenaka during the MDP government, was handed over to MIFCO on 8 October 2024. MIFCO stated that preparations are underway to bring the facility into operation. In this regard, MIFCO has said that the processes of hiring staff and transferring assets are proceeding in coordination with Fenaka.
Due to the Dhevvadhoo ice plant being out of operation, Dhevvadhoo fishermen currently have to go to Kooddoo to get ice. The island's fishermen describe this as a costly journey as well as a waste of a lot of time.
