President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has conferred the National Award of Recognition in the field of boat building to Abdul Rahman Yoosuf (Reef, R. Alifushi).
Abdul Rahman received the National Award of Recognition for his contributions to the field of boat building, specifically in constructing dhonis and yachts. The award was presented to him at the official National Day ceremony held today at Dharubaaruge. As the National Award of Recognition, the President presented him with a commemorative plaque.
Abdul Rahman entered the carpentry and boat building trade due to his deep interest in the craft, as Alifushi is an island renowned for boat building. He first entered the field and began building dhonis in the year 2000. His first major project as a master carpenter was building 10 safari bathelis for Universal Enterprises.
Over the past 23 years, Abdul Rahman has built and repaired 40 vessels of various sizes and types. These include cargo vessels, fishing dhonis, and safari vessels.
The recipients of the National Award were selected by the National Awards Committee, established by the President for this purpose. During a visit to Alifushi to evaluate Abdul Rahman's work, members of the National Awards Committee visited his workspaces and observed his craftsmanship. The committee members noted that Abdul Rahman is a highly skilled master carpenter who has achieved significant progress in the field of traditional boat building.
In addition to Abdul Rahman, 8 other individuals and one company received the National Award of Recognition in various fields at today's ceremony.
The National Award is an honour conferred by the government to recognize and encourage the continuous efforts and achievements of individuals, civil institutions, NGOs, and businesses that contribute to the sustainable development of the Maldivian nation and the welfare of its society.
