The Ministry of Construction has stated that 55.3% of the K. Maafushi harbor upgrade project has been completed.
The Ministry awarded this project to MTCC on 23 January 2023. MTCC commenced the practical work of this 82.6 million Rufiyaa project on 29 May 2023.
Under this project, dredging operations of 63,711 cubic meters for the new harbor basin, re-dredging of 28,836 cubic meters of the previously dredged lagoon, dredging of 4,414 cubic meters of the channel, and construction of a 31-meter breakwater are planned. Additionally, the installation of a 680-meter rock boulder revetment and a 700-meter geo-bag revetment has also been decided.
Furthermore, the construction of a 374-meter quay wall, a 160-meter long and 2-meter wide concrete jetty, and a 19-meter long and 3-meter wide bridge are planned. The project also includes the construction of a 1,869 square meter harbor pavement and the installation of harbor lights.
The Ministry of Construction stated that the harbor's quay wall work has now been fully completed, and harbor dredging work is currently underway. Looking at the overall project, the Ministry of Construction stated that 55.3% of the work is complete.
As Maafushi is an island with many activities in the tourism and fisheries industries, its harbor is used by a large number of vessels operating in both these sectors. With the development of the harbor, embarking and disembarking at the island will become easier, vessels used in economic activities will be able to approach easily, and the profits gained from business activities will increase.
