30-ton ice plant established in Dh. Meedhoo officially opens

The ice plant established in Dh. Atoll Meedhoo was opened today.

A 30-ton ice plant and a 50-ton ice storage facility have been established in Dh. Meedhoo.

This facility was established as part of the efforts to fulfill the promise of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to "arrange easy access to ice for fishermen." The facility will be operated by MIFCO.

The facility was inaugurated at a ceremony held today by the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam. The ceremony was attended by MIFCO CEO Brigadier General (Retired) Farhath Shaheer, Chief Imam of the Islamic Centre Fadheelathush-Shaikh Mohamed Latheef, senior officials of the Fisheries Ministry, senior officials of the Meedhoo Council, some fishermen, and citizens. With the opening of the ice plant, ice distribution has commenced today. Ice was distributed free of charge today.

The establishment of such a large facility to provide ice services to the fishermen of Meedhoo and the fishing islands in the region is a major advancement for the fisheries sector. The main purpose of establishing this ice plant is to prevent ice shortages for the fishermen of Dh. Atoll, further strengthen their fishing activities, and help increase their income. It is believed that this will give new encouragement to the fishing industry and bring positive changes to the island's economy.

The Meedhoo ice plant is a project carried out under the government's initiative to establish ice plants in 11 islands. The work on the Meedhoo ice plant was contracted to the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO). The development of the ice plant was awarded to MIFCO on September 24 last year.
