President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that a system to monitor the Maldives' maritime territory 24 hours a day without interruption will be established this month.
Speaking at a meeting with the residents of R. Meedhoo, the President said that while the Maldives has a vast Exclusive Economic Zone, there is currently no capacity to monitor the area independently. He noted that the vast area available to expand the economy, especially fisheries, is not being monitored, and that this has been the capacity level for a long time.
"Even if someone else enters this large area and uses it, there is really nothing we can do. Even if a threat comes, there is nothing we can do without seeking the help of others," the President said.
The President said that true efforts to stand on our own two feet have not been made so far. Therefore, arrangements are being made to monitor the area, and God willing, a system to monitor the Maldives' maritime territory 24 hours a day without interruption will be established this month, the President said.
The President said that once this system is established, the feeling of being able to protect the Maldivian nation will be realized, and a sense of independence and sovereignty will be felt. He added that it will provide the assurance that this country can be protected without relying on the power and assistance of others.
