The Governments of the Maldives and Pakistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Fisheries Cooperation today in Islamabad, establishing a formal framework to boost bilateral trade, technical collaboration, and aquaculture development between the two nations.
The MoU was exchanged between His Excellency Mohamed Saeed, Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade of the Maldives, and His Excellency Muhammad Junaid Anwar, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs of Pakistan. The exchange took place during the ongoing State Visit of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to Pakistan.
The signing of the fisheries agreement follows official bilateral talks held earlier today at the Prime Minister’s House between President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.
During their high-level discussions, both leaders highlighted fisheries and agriculture as key priority sectors for strengthening economic ties. The new agreement directly supports the broader consensus reached by both heads of government to expand bilateral trade from $13 million to $200 million over the next two years.
Under the newly established framework, the Maldives and Pakistan aim to foster closer collaboration in sustainable fisheries management and aquaculture sector.
