The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture, and Ocean Resources, in collaboration with the GA. Villingili Council, has successfully completed a specialized training program on diamondback squid fishing in GA. Villingili.
According to the Fisheries Ministry, the program was conducted from October 3–4 with a total of eight participants, who received practical and technical instruction on diamondback squid fishing methods.
Led by technical experts from the Ministry, the training covered hands-on harvesting techniques as well as business fundamentals, including business creation and operations, record-keeping, market research, and product marketing. Participants were also trained on product pricing, hygienic packaging, and labeling standards.
This initiative forms part of an ongoing regional training series aimed at unlocking the economic potential of the Maldives' deep-sea marine resources. The first round of the program was held in Fuvahmulah City on September 15 with 14 participants, while the next session is scheduled to take place in GDh. Fiyoaree.
The primary objective of the program is to introduce an entirely new branch of fishing to the Maldives and engage youth in the fisheries sector. Additionally, it aims to diversify traditional fishing practices by capitalizing on deep-sea marine resources, opening new revenue streams, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local fishermen and community members.
