The President and members of the GA. Vilingili Council met yesterday with Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives H.E. Mr. Kong Xianhua to explore strategic partnerships aimed at advancing the local fisheries sector and marine industry.
The high-level discussions focused on key initiatives including value-added tuna processing, marine research, fuel-efficient vessel technology, and preserving traditional boatbuilding techniques.
Key fisheries and maritime areas agreed upon for further technical and feasibility exploration include:
Value-Added Tuna Processing: Identifying Chinese partners to advise on converting fish-processing by-products into high-value commercial items like fishmeal, fish oil, and pet food, while complementing existing operations at Kooddoo.
Marine Science & Tuna Research: Partnering with Chinese ocean universities and research institutions to study tuna fisheries, reef health, marine ecosystems, and aquaculture feasibility.
Cleaner Vessel Technology: Introducing local boat owners to Chinese marine-engineering specialists to evaluate fuel-efficient engines, hybrid propulsion, and battery systems for local dhonis.
Preserving Traditional Boatbuilding: Collaborating with Chinese cultural institutions to document the techniques, designs, and terminology of Vilingili’s master dhoni builders.
Commercial Fisheries Investment: Exploring potential commercial investments in localized tuna canning, boat repair yards, and aquaculture ventures.
Beyond the core fisheries focus, both delegations also agreed to explore preliminary technical cooperation in controlled-environment vegetable farming, island bird habitat research, healthcare capacity building for Vilingili Hospital, renewable energy, and prefabricated housing.
Moving forward, the GA. Vilingili Council and the Chinese Embassy will establish direct contact points to coordinate follow-up specialist visits and draft joint project concept papers.
