The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, in collaboration with China’s Hainan University, officially commenced a technical training workshop focused on fisheries and the blue economy.
The opening ceremony of the workshop was graced by Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam and the Ambassador of China to the Maldives, His Excellency Kong Xinhua.
The workshop focus heavily on critical marine and environmental issues. Key areas of discussion include sustainable fisheries management, conservation of marine life species, and the development of tropical aquaculture to adapt to changing climate patterns. Additional focal points involve the restoration of degraded coral reefs and ecosystems, as well as early-warning mechanisms for climate-induced natural disasters.
A total of 51 participants are attending the technical sessions, representing a broad cross-section of institutions including the Ministry of Fisheries, the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), the Maldives National University (MNU), MIFCO, the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, the Environment Regulation Authority(ERA), and Villa International High School.
As part of their extensive four-day itinerary in the country, the visiting delegation from Hainan University is also scheduled to tour the ministry’s specialized mariculture research facility on the island of K. Maniyafushi.
This collaborative engagement forms a vital part of the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership between the Maldives and China, aimed at bolstering bilateral ties, sharing technical expertise, and building local institutional capacity.
