The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a White Alert across a large expanse of the country today, warning of worsening weather conditions and strong wind gusts.
The alert covers the region from Shaviyani Atoll to Laamu Atoll, effective from 15:00 hrs to 21:00 hrs. According to the agency, the affected areas are expected to experience heavy rain and thunderstorms, with winds gusting up to 35 mph.
In addition to the immediate alert, the MET Office warned that the Southwest Monsoon will strengthen across the Maldives over the next three days, bringing stronger winds and rougher seas.
From September 11 to 13, sea conditions across most regions—excluding the far south—are forecasted to be generally rough. While seas in the southern atolls will remain moderate, choppy conditions and sudden rough seas are expected during squalls. Authorities advise seafarers and the general public to exercise caution and monitor updated weather advisories closely.
