The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has urged the public, particularly seafarers and fishermen, to exercise caution as the Southwest Monsoon is expected to strengthen, bringing rough seas and squally weather across the country over the next three days.
According to a weather advisory issued today, seas are expected to be generally rough across central and northern atolls from September 11 to 13. While southern waters will remain slight to moderate, conditions are forecast to become rough during squalls.
Wind Forecast:
Central and Northern Regions: Westerly and northwesterly winds between 15 and 22 mph.
Southern Atolls: Southwesterly and westerly winds between 5 and 15 mph.
During Squalls: Wind speeds may reach up to 40 mph.
Additionally, widespread rain is forecast across most parts of the country, with heavy showers and thunderstorms expected in several islands.
Given the deteriorating sea conditions, authorities have advised fishing vessels and sea travelers to ensure all safety equipment is in working order and to check the latest weather updates before setting sail.
