MALE', Maldives — The government is considering establishing a new ice plant in N. Lhohi to provide a permanent solution to ongoing supply constraints faced by local fishermen, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam announced during today’s parliamentary session.
Speaking at the Parliament, Minister Shiyam highlighted that the existing facility in Lhohi is currently unable to operate at full capacity. Delivering a lasting resolution to the resulting challenges faced by fishermen remains a top priority for the administration, he emphasized.
Temporary Repairs Completed Following Breakdown
Addressing recent operational disruptions, Minister Shiyam confirmed that issues arising at the Lhohi ice plant on the 4th of this month have been temporarily resolved. However, output still falls short of meeting the total demand of the island's fishing fleet.
Prior technical interventions undertaken to keep the facility running include:
Broader Infrastructure Challenges
The Minister previously noted that major operational difficulties emerged after ice plants formerly managed by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) were transferred to Fenaka Corporation. Restoring these facilities to full operational status requires investments amounting to millions of Rufiyaa per site.
The government maintains its core objective of ensuring an uninterrupted, reliable supply of ice for fishermen across all regions of the country as quickly as possible.
