The Sixth Maldives Marine Science Symposium officially commenced today at the Maldives National University's Central Auditorium, bringing together researchers, academics, and marine professionals to discuss the future of the nation's marine ecosystems.
The symposium was inaugurated by the Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam. Delivering his inaugural address, the Minister encouraged participants to strengthen collaborations, build new professional connections, support the development of Maldivian research capacity, and engage in meaningful discussions that will shape the future of marine science in the Maldives. He also underscored the importance of conducting marine scientific research in accordance with national regulations to ensure research is well coordinated, conducted responsibly, and contributes to a comprehensive body of knowledge.
Background, Objectives, and Research Lineup
Established in 2016, the biennial Maldives Marine Science Symposium series has evolved into the nation’s premier platform for consolidating marine research. Previous editions have successfully bridged the gap between academic institutions, independent researchers, NGOs, and government bodies, driving critical outcomes by:
Fostering collaborative networks among local and international marine scientists.
Providing empirical data that informs national policies on sustainable resource utilization, coral reef management, and fisheries governance.
Promoting public awareness by translating complex ecological findings into actionable conservation strategies.
Organized by the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI) in partnership with the Maldives National University (MNU), this year's two-day event features a robust agenda comprising 47 research presentations, which include 32 oral presentations and 15 poster presentations.
The accepted papers span five core thematic categories addressing contemporary environmental and ecological challenges:
Coral Reefs, Restoration and Climate Change
Fisheries, Governance and Society
Sea Turtles Ecology, Health and Conservation
Sharks, Rays and Other Marine Megafauna
Coastal Ecosystems and Seabirds
The Symposium reflects the continued commitment to advancing marine research, strengthening collaboration, and promoting the sustainable management of the Maldives' ocean resources.
