A category allocating 100 flats for fishermen has been included in the policy for issuing flats to residents living in Male', under the government's housing policy.
Under the government's policy to provide housing for every citizen over the age of 18, a 'Policy on Issuing Flats to Residents Living in Male'' was formulated and published in the Maldivian Government Gazette on the 16th of this month. Housing units are provided to fishermen by including them in the special priority category for housing provision under Article 15 of the policy.
It has been decided to issue 100 housing units under the special category for fishermen. The policy states that these units will be issued to individuals included in the fishermen's registry who have established families in Male'.
According to the government's announcement regarding this matter, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure will open the opportunity to submit applications for housing units under this policy from 04 January 2026 until 03 March 2026. Applications for flats must be submitted via the www.hiyaavehi.gov.mv portal.
A total of 7,500 housing units are scheduled to be issued under the 'Policy on Issuing Flats to Residents Living in Male''. In addition to fishermen, it has been decided this time to allocate 200 flats to employees working in the tourism industry who have established families in Male', and 50 flats to individuals registered in the taxi drivers' registry who have established families in Male'. It is noteworthy that this is the first time flats are being specially allocated to individuals working in specific industries from a government housing scheme.
Ensuring housing for every citizen who has reached the age of 18 and does not have their own housing is a presidential pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
